Individuals involved in legal action, mediation, or therapy may be identified as potentially having a substance (drug or alcohol) abuse problem. A formal substance abuse evaluation can be utilized to determine extent and amount of substance use, abuse, or dependence. Using a motivational interviewing approach, evaluations are completed through an in-depth face-to-face interview with the client, formalized screening instruments, medical and drug testing, and collateral contacts. Through the evaluation, nine major domains in an individual's life are addressed including:

1. Alcohol and/or drug use: level, pattern, and history of use;
   
   
2. Life problems: signs and symptoms of drug or alcohol use, and possible negative consequences of alcohol and drug use;
   
   
3. Dependence syndrome: DSM-IV abuse or dependence diagnosis as appropriate;
   
   
4. Functional analysis: examining the antecedents and consequences of the substance use;
   
   
5. Biomedical effects: effects of the substance use on the individual's physical health;
   
   
6. Neuropsychological effects: screening for cognitive difficulties;
   
   
7. Family history: problems experienced by biological relatives;
   
   
8. Other psychological problems: brief screening for other mental health
   concerns; and
   
   
9. Motivation for treatment: individual's willingness to change behavior. 

Following the completion of the evaluation process, a thorough written summary of findings will be provided. This report will include a discussion of the issues that are important to be addressed and recommendations for the most appropriate next steps to be taken towards working through the identified problems. Any substance abuse education and/or treatment recommendations will be made with the assistance of the American Society for Addiction Medicine (ASAM) placement criteria.
